Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) tend to be very diligent people with excellent attention to detail, but face many challenges integrating into a new work environment. I believe with proper assistance, accommodations and training, they can be a valuable asset in the workplace. How can we make this transition easier/less stressful for those on the autism spectrum, you ask? By offering and implementing team skill building programs, as well as inclusion training. The long-term benefit to inclusive organizations is that they create, attract, and retain the best employees. Through encouragement and constant growth, employees will feel valued and satisfied with their job, which overall creates a happier and more productive environment. People with autism benefit from having a solid day to day routine. This helps them deal with anxiety, depression, and uncertainty that ordinarily confronts them in daily life. When that sense of stability and wellness is fulfilled, then it becomes easier to handle other changes. They may need time to rest or relax before learning new skills and challenges. That is why I think it is very important to allow those with ASD to periodically take short breaks to alleviate any frustrations they may have. Triple S Ranch Market & Garden hires adults with autism to manage, operate, and sustain a 40-acre farmstead. Their mission? In 5 years, Triple S Ranch plans to have the farm completely operated and manage by adults with ASD! They believe in honesty, integrity, and ethical behaviour towards all their workers. They understand the challenges those with ASD face, and are willing to help them succeed. Make sure to check out their website if you like supporting local businesses, have autism yourself, and/or are interested in eco-friendly agricultural products. It's also a great way to learn more about us and find the most up-to-date information on what we are doing. Hopefully, now you have learned a little more about people with ASD and the obstacles they may encounter. As well as gained information on what the company I work for offers. To quote Diane Elizabeth, who is a successful entrepreneur and CEO of Skincare Ox,”By not utilizing talented individuals because they might need accommodations is a serious issue. Focus on what the person can do for the company, not what they can’t do.” Thanks for reading.
